During this tour the visitor will be able to know the theory of Erastóstenes Greek philosopher, who stated that the Earth was spherical when realizing that the solar rays formed different angles the same day, which it happens in the Solstice of Summer.

In addition, the voyages made by the First French Geodesic Mission, which was led by the French Louis Godin, the Charles Marie de la Condamine, Pierre Bouguer, and his assistants Jussieu, Morainville, Hugo, Verguin, Godin des Odannais and Seniegues . Because the Spain King Philip V granted the permit, appointed two young sailors, Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa to re-evaluate Spain within the Mission.

They came to equatorial lands in 1736. The valiant work was joined by the Ecuadorian geographer Pedro Vicente Maldonado, providing collaboration and assistance in the areas of his knowledge to the Geodesic Mission, he was subsequently the author of the first map of the Province of Quito.

The measurement of 32 triangles in the hard inter-Andean alley since 1736 and 1740, in conclusion the arc of the meridian was 3 ° 7'11 ".

The contribution of the Condamine Mission to the knowledge of the shape and dimensions of the Earth was remarkable, however, the advances of science determined that in the middle of the 19th century, will rethink the problem of precision that had served as the foundation of Geodesy.

The International Geodesic Association, founded in 1862, had been planning the need to re- measure the arches of Lapland and of Ecuador, it was France that once again committed to commissioning the work to the Geographical Institute of the Navy.

In 1899 an exploration was carried out and it was decided to measure a larger arch than the one of the Mission of the Condamine. This mission took place in the 20th century, from 1902 to 1906 they measured an arc of 5 ° 53'34 ", between Tulcán to the North and the peruvian Port of Paita to the South. It was commanded by Georges Perrier and Paúl Rivet.

On the second floor you can see a photographic exhibition of Cochasqui a memory of our ancestors.

Cochasqui, is considered as a space of astronomical observation, from which you can visualize stars and constellations as well as astronomical phenomena that influence the agricultural calendar, also offers a graphic story of the Quitu-Cara culture; a warrior town, full of knowledge and traditions.

➤ The grand Cotopaxi, which has an almost perfect snow cone and is at 5.897 meters of altitude, is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because to the eruptions frequency, its eruptive style, its glacier coverage and the number of populations potentially exposed to their threats.

Guayasamín Pavilion

The pavilion of the Guayasamín Foundation exhibits the art collections of Oswaldo Guayasamín, an outstanding Ecuadorian painter, draftsman, sculptor and muralist recognized worldwide.

His extraordinary virtues for painting stand out at the beginning of his academic life which was somewhat complicated. His name and native origin, the poverty of his childhood, the murder of his friend, the overwhelming crisis of the 1930s, the Mexican Revolution, the Spanish Civil War, and everything that is happening in the world makes him see and feel a reality that is sharpened with the passage of time and in front of which it assumes an ideological attitude that is reflected in its plastic conception.

In 1940 he graduated from painter and sculptor at the Fine Arts School. Two years later he gets his first Mariano Aguilera award.

Since 1996 he began his most important work in Quito, the architectural space known as "The Chapel of Man", as a tribute to the human being, especially the Latin American people with their suffering, struggles and achievements, passing through the pre-Columbian* world, the conquest, the colony and the miscegenation. Oswaldo Guayasamín died on March 10, 1999, even though he did not finish his masterpiece, "The Chapel of Man", whose first phase was inaugurated in 2002.

We invite you to visit the pavilion of the Guayasamín Foundation, where you can see some of the works of Oswaldo Guayasamín, highlighting the following:

It means "The Crying Way" in Quichua. These paintings from 1946 to 1952 reflect a vision of the mestizo, Indian and black peoples, with their cultures and expressions of joy, sadness, tradition, identity, religion, especially of the Andean countries.

The works were painted in the 60's due to war conflicts* and social injustice and show all the tragedy of the twentieth century, wars men kill, torture and pain produced by dictators, the anguish of mothers who they lost their children.

"While I live I always remember you" or "La Ternura", another collection with more than 100 works, which he painted from 1988 to 1999, is a tribute to his mother, the mother, as a symbol of the defense of life.
